We are visiting Antigua and Barbuda, a twin-island nation in the Caribbean Sea known for its 365 beaches—that’s one for every day of the year! Around 100,000 people live here, and the capital city is Saint John’s. The official language is English, but you’ll often hear people speaking a fast and rhythmic dialect called Antiguan Creole.

Antigua and Barbuda is quite small, covering about 440 square kilometers, or 170 square miles. If you were to drive around the entire edge of the main island, it would only take you about an hour.

The most popular sport here is Cricket, and the islands are home to some of the greatest players in the world! Their national animal is the Fallow Deer, which was brought to the islands a long time ago. These deer are very shy and live mostly on the quieter island of Barbuda.

The flag is very colorful and features a rising sun on a black background, with the blue stripe representing the Caribbean Sea and the white stripe standing for the white sand of the beaches, while the red sections represent the energy of the people.

The food is a tropical treat, especially the national dish called Fungie and Pepperpot. Fungie is a cornmeal dumpling, and Pepperpot is a hearty stew made with vegetables and salted meat. You should also try the Antigua Black Pineapple, which is famous for being the sweetest pineapple in the world!

Now, for something a bit strange! The island of Barbuda is home to the Frigate Bird Sanctuary, where thousands of huge birds live. During mating season, the male birds blow up a giant red sac on their throats like a massive balloon to attract a mate. It looks like they have swallowed a bright red beach ball!

Also, watch your step on the beach! You might see the Ghost Crab, which is so pale it is almost see-through. They blend in perfectly with the sand and can disappear in the blink of an eye, making it look like they just vanished into thin air!

From the 365 sandy beaches to the giant red-throated birds, Antigua and Barbuda is a Caribbean paradise.
