We are visiting Angola, a large and beautiful country on the west coast of Southern Africa. About 37 million people live here, and the capital is a busy city by the ocean called Luanda. Because it was once connected to Portugal, the official language is Portuguese, making it one of the largest Portuguese-speaking countries in the world!
Angola is a big country! It covers about 1.25 million square kilometers, or 481,000 square miles. To imagine that, it is about twice the size of the state of Texas, or roughly five times the size of the United Kingdom. It has everything from huge waterfalls and deep forests to a long, sandy coastline.
One of the most amazing things in Angola is a tree called the Baobab. These trees are famous because they look like they were planted upside down with their roots sticking up in the air! They can live for thousands of years and have huge trunks that can store water to help them survive during dry times.
The most popular sport in Angola is Football, and their national team is nicknamed the “Giant Sable Antelopes.” This is named after their national animal, the Giant Sable Antelope, which is very rare and has magnificent, long, curved horns. It lives deep in the forests and is a symbol of beauty and grace for the people.
The flag of Angola is very striking with two colors: Red and Black.
Red stands for the bravery of the people and black for the continent of Africa.
In the middle, there is a Yellow Machete and Gear, which stand for the hard work of the farmers and builders.
The food is delicious and often features a dish called Funje, which is a smooth mash made from cassava flour. It is usually served with spicy stews or fresh fish from the Atlantic Ocean.
Now, for something a bit strange! Angola is home to a very weird plant called the Welwitschia. It only grows two leaves in its entire life, and they never fall off. Instead, they just keep growing and growing for over 1,000 years! Because the wind shreds the leaves over time, the plant ends up looking like a giant, tangled pile of dry, brown octopus tentacles sitting in the desert sand.
Also, in the Luanda markets, you might see people selling fried mopane worms. These are large, crunchy caterpillars that are a very popular snack. They are full of vitamins, but they definitely have a unique look when they are served on a plate!
