Our adventure brings us to Cameroon, often called “Africa in Miniature” because it contains every major landscape found on the continent. There are around 30 million people living here, and the capital is Yaoundé, though the seaside city of Douala is the largest hub. The official languages are French and English, reflecting its unique colonial history.

Cameroon covers about 475,442 square kilometers, or 183,569 square miles. To imagine its size, the country is roughly the same size as the state of California in the U.S., or if you look at Europe, it is approximately the same size as Spain. It stretches from the edge of the Sahara Desert in the north all the way down to the tropical rainforests and volcanic beaches of the south.

The most popular sport is Football, and their national team, the “Indomitable Lions,” is legendary for its success in international tournaments. Their national animal is the Lion, representing the strength and spirit of the Cameroonian people.

The flag features three vertical stripes of green, red, and yellow with a yellow star in the center, where the green represents the lush vegetation of the south, the red stands for unity, and the yellow represents the sun and the savannas of the north.

The food is incredibly varied and flavorful. The national dish is Ndole, a rich and creamy stew made from bitterleaf greens, peanuts, and spices, often served with fish or meat. You might also try Koki, which is a savory pudding made from black-eyed peas and palm oil, steamed in banana leaves.

Cameroon is home to Mount Cameroon, the highest peak in West Africa and an active volcano that rises straight up from the coast. In the northern regions, the Mandara Mountains feature incredible rock formations and traditional villages that look like they are carved into the hills. The country is also the birthplace of Makossa music, a rhythmic style that has filled dance floors across the globe for decades. Cameroon is even home to the Goliath Frog, the largest frog in the world, which can grow to be over a foot long!
