The United Kingdom (or UK) is a sovereign country off the northwestern coast of the European mainland. There are around 68 million people living here, and the capital is London, a global center of finance, culture, and history that has stood for two millennia. The UK covers about 242,495 square kilometers (93,628 square miles). That’s roughly the same size as the state of Oregon or about the same size as Romania. It is made up of four distinct nations: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, each with its own unique character and landscape, from the rugged Highlands to the white cliffs of Dover.
The most popular sports are Football (soccer), Cricket, and Rugby, with the English Premier League being the most-watched football league in the world. Their national animal is the Lion, a symbol of strength and bravery, though the Bulldog is often used as a more informal national icon.
The flag, known as the Union Jack, combines the red cross of St George (England), the white saltire of St Andrew (Scotland), and the red saltire of St Patrick (Ireland) on a blue field where the red represents courage, the white symbolizes peace and honesty, and the blue stands for vigilance and justice.
The food is a comforting collection of hearty classics that have warmed the nation for centuries. You must try Fish and Chips, crispy battered cod or haddock served with thick-cut fries and mushy peas. Another favorite is the Sunday Roast, featuring roasted meat (usually beef, lamb, or chicken) with roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables, and a fluffy Yorkshire Pudding. Interestingly, the UK has a “Right to Roam” law in many areas, allowing people to walk across private land to enjoy the natural beauty of the countryside!
