Arriving in the “Spice Isle” of the Caribbean—welcome to Grenada, a lush, tri-island nation consisting of Grenada itself and two smaller islands, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. The flag features a central red border with six gold stars, a green and gold interior divided into four triangles, and a seventh star in a red circle at the center, with a small symbol of a nutmeg clove on the left side to represent the country’s main export. The red symbolizes courage and vitality, the gold represents wisdom and the sun, and the green stands for vegetation and agriculture.

The food is incredibly aromatic because of the island’s abundance of spices. You must try Oil Down, the national dish, which is a hearty one-pot meal made of salted meat, chicken, dumplings, breadfruit, and vegetables, all steamed in coconut milk and turmeric. Because the island is a top producer of Nutmeg and Cocoa, you will find these ingredients in everything from ice cream to savory sauces.

Grenada is home to the world’s first Underwater Sculpture Park, where life-sized statues sit on the ocean floor, acting as artificial reefs for coral and fish. The island is also famous for its Grand Anse Beach, frequently ranked as one of the best beaches in the world for its two miles of soft white sand. If you head into the mountains, you can swim in the pools of the Annandale Falls or visit Grand Etang Lake, which is located inside the crater of an extinct volcano. Grenada is one of the world’s largest exporters of nutmeg and mace, and the scent of spices literally hangs in the air as you drive through the countryside.
