Welcome to the “Island in the Sun” and the birthplace of Reggae—Jamaica, the third-largest island in the Caribbean and a global cultural powerhouse. There are around 3 million people living here, and the capital is Kingston, a city known for its deep musical roots and the world’s seventh-largest natural harbor. The official language is English, though most people speak Jamaican Patois, a colorful and rhythmic creole language.

Jamaica covers about 10,991 square kilometers (4,244 square miles). That’s roughly the same size as the state of Connecticut in the U.S., or about the same size as Kosovo. Despite its small size, the island is mountainous, with the Blue Mountains dominating the eastern landscape.

The most popular sports are Athletics (Track and Field) and Cricket. Jamaica is legendary for producing the fastest humans on Earth, including Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. Their national animal is the Doctor Bird (a type of hummingbird with long tail feathers), and the national fruit is the Ackee.

The flag features a gold diagonal cross (saltire) that divides the flag into four sections of green and black, where the gold represents the natural wealth and sunlight, the green stands for agricultural resources and hope, and the black symbolizes the strength and creativity of the people.

The food is a fiery and delicious blend of techniques and spices. You must try Jerk Chicken or pork, which is marinated in a spicy mixture of pimento (allspice) and Scotch Bonnet peppers and slow-cooked over pimento wood. The national dish is Ackee and Saltfish, usually served with “food” (boiled green bananas, yuca, and dumplings). Jamaica is also home to Blue Mountain Coffee, which is considered one of the rarest and most expensive coffees in the world.

Jamaica is home to Nine Mile, the birthplace and final resting place of the legendary Bob Marley, whose music brought Reggae to the world. For nature lovers, Dunn’s River Falls near Ocho Rios allows you to climb up a giant natural limestone staircase as cool water cascades down over you. The island is also famous for the Luminous Lagoon, where the water glows bright blue when disturbed due to microscopic organisms. If you head to Negril, you’ll find the famous Seven Mile Beach, known for its turquoise waters and world-class sunsets. Jamaica was also the place where Ian Fleming wrote all of his James Bond novels at his estate, GoldenEye.
