Welcome to the Mother Colony of the West Indies—Saint Kitts and Nevis, a dual-island nation located in the Leeward Islands of the West Indies. There are around 50,000 people living here, and the capital is Basseterre, located on the larger island of Saint Kitts. The official language is English, often spoken with a rhythmic, melodic Caribbean lilt.

The country covers about 261 square kilometers (101 square miles). The islands are roughly one-and-a-half times the size of Washington, D.C., or about the same size as the city of Marseille, France. Saint Kitts is shaped like a drumstick, while Nevis is nearly circular and dominated by a single massive volcano at its center.

The most popular sports are Cricket and Football, with the islands often hosting international cricket matches at the beautiful Warner Park. Their national animal is the Vervet Monkey, which was brought over by the French centuries ago and now outnumbers the human population!

The flag consists of a green triangle and a red triangle separated by a black diagonal stripe with two white stars and yellow borders, where the green represents the fertility of the land, the red symbolizes the struggle for freedom, the black represents the African heritage of the people, and the yellow borders stand for the consistent sunshine.

The food is a flavorful Caribbean blend with heavy West African and British influences. You must try the national dish: Stewed Saltfish with Spicy Plantains, Seasoned Breadfruit, and Coconut Dumplings. Another favorite is Goat Water, a thin, savory stew made with goat meat, cloves, and yams. For a refreshing drink, locals love Cane Spirits or “Ting with a Sting” (grapefruit soda with local rum).

Saint Kitts and Nevis is home to Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site known as the “Gibraltar of the West Indies” for its incredible military architecture and views. The country features the Scenic Railway, the last remaining railway in the West Indies, which originally transported sugar cane but now takes visitors on a tour of the island’s lush perimeter. You can visit the Nevis Peak, a dormant volcano that is almost always shrouded in clouds. Interestingly, Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, was born in Charlestown, Nevis, and you can visit his childhood home there.
