A peaceful, landlocked nation in Eastern Europe situated between Romania and Ukraine. There are around 2 million people living here, and the capital is Chișinău, a city known for its abundance of green parks and Soviet-era architecture. The official language is Romanian, though many people also speak Russian.

Moldova covers about 33,846 square kilometers (13,068 square miles). To imagine its size, the country is roughly the same size as the state of Maryland in the U.S., or just a bit larger than Belgium. The landscape is a gentle tapestry of fertile plains, rocky hills, and deep river valleys, making it a paradise for agriculture.

The most popular sport is Football, but the traditional form of wrestling called Trântă is the national sport and a point of great pride. Their national animal is the Aurochs, an ancient wild ox whose head is famously featured on the country’s coat of arms and flag.

The flag consists of three vertical stripes of blue, yellow, and red with the national coat of arms in the center, where the blue represents the sky, the yellow symbolizes the grain fields, and the red stands for the blood of those who fought for the country.

The food is hearty and rustic, with a heavy emphasis on fresh vegetables and dairy. You must try Mămăligă, the national dish, which is a thick cornmeal porridge often served with brânză (sheep’s milk cheese), sour cream, and garlic sauce. Another favorite is Plăcintă, a thin, flaky pastry filled with anything from pumpkin and apples to salty cheese or potatoes. Moldova is also world-famous for its Wine, which has been produced here for thousands of years.

Moldova is home to Mileștii Mici, which holds the Guinness World Record for the largest wine cellar in the world, with over 200 kilometers of underground tunnels housing nearly 2 million bottles. The country also features Orheiul Vechi, a stunning archaeological complex carved into a massive limestone ridge, featuring ancient cave monasteries that are still in use today. Interestingly, the country’s shape on a map is often compared to a bunch of grapes, which is fitting for a nation where wine is so central to its identity. For history enthusiasts, the Soroca Fortress is a perfectly preserved 15th-century castle on the banks of the Dniester River.
