Ahlan! Welcome to the lowest country on Earth—the Maldives!

A tropical paradise located in the Indian Ocean, southwest of India and Sri Lanka. It is a nation made up of 26 atolls containing over 1,000 coral islands. There are around 520,000 people living here, and the capital is Malé, one of the most densely populated cities in the world. The official language is Dhivehi, which has its own unique script called Thaana.

The Maldives covers about 298 square kilometers (115 square miles) of land, making it the smallest country in Asia. The total land area is about one and a half times the size of Washington, D.C. However, the country is spread across roughly 90,000 square kilometers of ocean. It is the flattest country in the world, with an average ground level of only 1.5 meters above sea level.

The most popular sport is Football, followed by various water sports like Surfing and Diving. Their national animal is the Yellowfin Tuna, which is also a vital part of their economy and diet.

The flag consists of a green rectangle with a white crescent in the center, all surrounded by a red border, where the red represents the blood of national heroes, the green symbolizes prosperity and peace, and the white crescent stands for the Islamic faith.

The food is heavily based on three main ingredients: fish, coconut, and starch. You must try Mas Huni, a popular breakfast dish made of shredded smoked tuna, grated coconut, lemon, and onions, eaten with Roshi (flatbread). Another staple is Garudhiya, a fragrant fish soup served with rice and lime. Because of the island setting, you will find some of the freshest seafood in the world, often grilled with local spices.

The Maldives is home to some of the world’s most luxurious Overwater Bungalows, where you can see the ocean floor through your bedroom floor. The country features the Vaadhoo Island “Sea of Stars,” where bioluminescent plankton creates a glowing blue effect in the waves at night. It is a world-class destination for Scuba Diving, offering the chance to swim with whale sharks and manta rays in crystal-clear water. Interestingly, the Maldives held the world’s first Underwater Cabinet Meeting in 2009 to raise awareness about the threat of rising sea levels to the nation.
