A scenic nation stretching along the southeast coast of Africa. There are around 34 million people living here, and the capital is Maputo, a city famous for its wide avenues lined with jacaranda trees and its Mediterranean-style architecture. The official language is Portuguese, though dozens of Bantu languages like Makhuwa and Tsonga are spoken across the country.
Mozambique covers about 801,590 square kilometers (309,500 square miles). The country is roughly twice the size of the state of California in the U.S., or about the same size as Turkey. Its coastline is one of the longest in Africa, stretching over 2,400 kilometers (1,500 miles) along the Indian Ocean.
The most popular sport is Football, followed by Basketball and Roller Hockey, a legacy of its Portuguese history. Their national animal is the African Elephant, particularly the ones found in the Maputo Elephant Reserve.
The flag consists of green, black, and yellow horizontal stripes separated by thin white stripes, with a red triangle on the left containing a yellow star, a book, a hoe, and an AK-47, where the green represents the riches of the land, the black symbolizes the African continent, the yellow stands for the country’s minerals, and the red represents the struggle for independence.
The food is a fiery and flavorful mix of African, Portuguese, and Arab influences. You must try Galinha à Zambeziana, a grilled chicken marinated in lime, garlic, and coconut milk. Another favorite is Piri-Piri Chicken, famous worldwide for its spicy kick. Because of the long coast, seafood is a staple—Grilled Prawns from Mozambique are considered some of the best in the world. For a side dish, try Matapa, made from cassava leaves, ground peanuts, and coconut milk.
Mozambique is home to the Bazaruto Archipelago, a group of islands that are part of a marine national park featuring some of the best diving and snorkeling in the world. The country also features Gorgongosa National Park, which has undergone one of the most successful wildlife restoration projects in history. For history buffs, the Island of Mozambique is a UNESCO World Heritage site that served as a major trading post and the capital for centuries. Mozambique is also the only country in the world to feature a modern firearm on its national flag.
