Waalie! Welcome to the land of ancient deserts and giant dunes—Namibia!

A vast and ruggedly beautiful country in Southwest Africa. There are around 3 million people living here, and the capital is Windhoek, a city nestled in a valley surrounded by rolling hills. The official language is English, but Oshiwambo, Afrikaans, and German are also widely spoken across the country.

Namibia covers about 824,292 square kilometers (318,261 square miles). The country is roughly half the size of Alaska in the U.S., or about the same size as Pakistan. It is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world, dominated by the Namib Desert along the coast and the Kalahari Desert to the east.

The most popular sports are Football, Rugby, and Cricket, with the national rugby team being a frequent participant in the World Cup. Their national animal is the Oryx (Gemsbok), which is perfectly adapted to the harsh desert environment and appears on the national coat of arms.

The flag consists of a blue triangle on top and a green triangle on the bottom separated by a diagonal red stripe with white borders, with a golden sun in the blue section, where the blue represents the sky and ocean, the red symbolizes the people and their heroism, the green stands for agriculture, and the white represents peace.

The food is a unique mix of indigenous traditions and colonial influences. You must try Kapana, a popular street food consisting of grilled beef seasoned with spices and salt. Another staple is Oshifima, a stiff porridge made from pearl millet (mahangu), usually served with a meat or vegetable stew. Because of its German heritage, Namibia is also famous for its high-quality Beer and Game Meat, such as springbok or oryx steaks.

Namibia is home to Sossusvlei, a salt and clay pan surrounded by some of the highest sand dunes in the world, including “Big Daddy,” which stands over 300 meters tall. The country features the Skeleton Coast, a hauntingly beautiful stretch of shoreline where the desert meet the Atlantic, famous for its many shipwrecks and seal colonies. For wildlife enthusiasts, Etosha National Park is one of Africa’s greatest safari destinations, centered around a massive salt pan that is visible from space. Namibia was also the first country in the world to incorporate environmental protection into its national constitution!
