There are around 11 million people living here, and the capital is Stockholm, a stunning city built on 14 islands connected by over 50 bridges. The official language is Swedish, though the country consistently ranks as one of the best in the world for English proficiency.

Sweden covers about 450,295 square kilometers (173,860 square miles). The country is roughly the same size as the state of California or about twice the size of the United Kingdom. Much of the north is located within the Arctic Circle, featuring dramatic wilderness, while the south is more agricultural and densely populated.

The most popular sports are Football and Ice Hockey, with the nation having a legendary history in both. Their national animal is the Moose (known as the “King of the Forest”), though the Eurasian Elk is the specific species found here.

The flag consists of a yellow Nordic cross on a blue field where the blue represents the sky and the yellow symbolizes the sun.

The food is simple, fresh, and often features flavors from the forest and sea. You must try Köttbullar, the famous Swedish meatballs traditionally served with cream sauce, boiled potatoes, and tart lingonberry jam. Another favorite is Gravlax, thinly sliced salmon cured in salt, sugar, and dill. A central part of Swedish culture is Fika, a daily break for coffee and a sweet treat, most often a Kanelbulle (cinnamon bun). For the brave, there is Surströmming, fermented herring known for its incredibly pungent aroma.

Sweden is home to the Vasa Museum in Stockholm, which houses a remarkably preserved 17th-century warship that sank on its maiden voyage. The country features the Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, the world’s first hotel made entirely of snow and ice, rebuilt every winter. You can visit Abisko National Park, one of the best places on Earth to witness the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). For a touch of history, explore Visby on the island of Gotland, a perfectly preserved medieval walled town. Interestingly, Sweden is so efficient at recycling that it actually imports trash from other countries to keep its waste-to-energy plants running!
