There are around 5 million people living here, and the capital is Bratislava, the only capital city in the world that borders two independent countries (Austria and Hungary). The official language is Slovak, often called the “Esperanto of Slavic languages” because it is widely understood by speakers of other Slavic tongues.

Slovakia covers about 49,035 square kilometers (18,933 square miles). To imagine its size, the country is roughly the same size as the state of West Virginia in the U.S., or about half the size of South Korea. Its geography is dominated by the Tatra Mountains in the north, which provide some of the most stunning alpine scenery in Central Europe.

The most popular sports are Ice Hockey and Football, with the nation’s hockey team being a source of immense national pride. Their national animal is the Brown Bear, which thrives in the dense forests of the High Tatras.

The flag consists of three horizontal stripes of white, blue, and red with the national coat of arms featuring a double cross on three hills, where the white, blue, and red are traditional Slavic colors and the double cross represents the nation’s Christian heritage.

The food is hearty, rustic, and incredibly comforting. You must try Bryndzové Halušky, the national dish consisting of small potato dumplings mixed with a salty sheep’s cheese called bryndza and topped with crispy bacon. Another favorite is Kapustnica, a thick sauerkraut soup with sausage and dried plums, traditionally served at Christmas. For dessert, try a Skalický Trdelník, a hollow grilled cake dusted with walnuts and sugar.

Slovakia is home to Spiš Castle, one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The country features Dobšinská Ice Cave, one of the most famous ice caves in the world, where ice stays frozen all year round. You can visit the High Tatras, a “miniature Alps” featuring the Gerlachovský štít, the highest peak in the Carpathian Mountains. For a trip back in time, explore Vlkolínec, a preserved village of traditional wooden houses. Interestingly, Slovakia is the world’s largest car producer per capita, with major global brands operating massive factories here!
