Welcome to the Land of Iron and Diamonds—Sierra Leone, a beautiful West African nation located on the Atlantic coast. There are around 9 million people living here, and the capital is Freetown, a city founded in 1792 as a refuge for formerly enslaved people, featuring a deep natural harbor and a famous 500-year-old Cotton Tree at its center. The official language is English, but Krio is the lingua franca that unites the country’s many ethnic groups.
Sierra Leone covers about 71,740 square kilometers (27,699 square miles). The country is roughly the same size as the state of South Carolina in the U.S., or about the same size as Ireland. The landscape is diverse, ranging from the mangrove swamps of the coast to the plateaus and mountains of the interior, including the Loma Mountains.
The most popular sport is Football, and the national team, the “Leone Stars,” is followed with immense passion. Their national animal is the Chimpanzee, which is highly protected, particularly at the world-renowned Tacugama Sanctuary.
The flag consists of three horizontal stripes of green, white, and blue, where the green represents the country’s agriculture and natural resources, the white stands for justice and unity, and the blue symbolizes the harbor of Freetown and the hope for world peace.
The food is spicy, flavorful, and often centered around rice and “plassas” (leafy green stews). You must try Cassava Leaf Stew, a rich dish made with ground cassava leaves, palm oil, and peanut butter, often served with fish or meat. Another favorite is Jollof Rice, which is a staple across West Africa but prepared here with its own unique Sierra Leonean twist. For a quick snack, look for Fry-fry, a popular street food consisting of fried plantains, sweet potatoes, and akara (bean cakes).
Sierra Leone is home to Tiwai Island, a wildlife sanctuary on the Moa River that boasts one of the highest concentrations of primates in the world. The country features Bunce Island, an 18th-century British slave castle that serves as a hauntingly preserved memorial to the history of the transatlantic slave trade. You can visit the Loma Mansa (Mount Bintumani), the highest peak in the country, offering incredible views of the savanna. For beach lovers, the Bureh Beach and River Number Two Beach are often described as some of the most pristine and beautiful in all of Africa. Interestingly, Sierra Leone is home to the “Star of Sierra Leone,” one of the largest diamonds ever discovered!
