Our journey brings us to Senegal, the westernmost country on the African mainland. There are around 18 million people living here, and the capital is Dakar, a vibrant, stylish peninsula city that juts out into the Atlantic Ocean. The official language is French, but Wolof is the most widely spoken language and serves as the heartbeat of the nation’s culture.
Senegal covers about 196,722 square kilometers (75,955 square miles). To imagine its size, the country is roughly the same size as the state of South Dakota in the U.S., or about two-thirds the size of Italy. The landscape transitions from the semi-arid Sahel in the north to lush, tropical forests in the southern region of Casamance.
The most popular sport is Football, and the national team, the “Lions of Teranga,” are celebrated heroes across the continent. However, Senegalese Wrestling (Laamb) is a massive traditional sport that draws thousands of fans to stadiums for spectacular displays of strength and ritual. Their national animal is the Lion, symbolizing bravery and power.
The flag consists of three vertical stripes of green, yellow, and red with a five-pointed green star in the center, where the green represents the forest and hope, the yellow stands for the wealth of the land and the sun, and the red symbolizes the blood shed for independence.
The food is considered some of the best in West Africa. You must try Thieboudienne, the national dish, which is a flavorful combination of fish, rice, and tomato sauce cooked in a single pot with vegetables like carrots and eggplant. Another favorite is Yassa, chicken or fish marinated in a mountain of caramelized onions, lemon, and mustard. For a refreshing drink, try Bissap, a deep red juice made from hibiscus flowers.
Senegal is home to Lake Retba (Lac Rose), a stunning lake that often turns a vivid pink color due to its high salt content and unique algae. The country features Gorée Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a deeply moving memorial to the Atlantic slave trade, known for its “Door of No Return.” You can visit the African Renaissance Monument in Dakar, the tallest statue in Africa, which stands higher than the Statue of Liberty. For nature lovers, the Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary is one of the world’s most important sites for migratory birds. Interestingly, Senegal is famous for the concept of Teranga, a Wolof word that translates to “hospitality” but represents a deep-seated cultural philosophy of sharing and welcoming strangers as family.
