Salom! Welcome to the Roof of the World—Tajikistan, a rugged, landlocked nation in Central Asia known for its towering peaks and ancient Persian heritage. There are around 10,000,000 people living here, and the capital is Dushanbe, a city whose name means “Monday” because it grew out of a popular Monday market village. The official language is Tajik, a variety of Persian, making it culturally distinct from its Turkic-speaking neighbors.
Tajikistan covers about 143,100 square kilometers (55,251 square miles). That’s roughly the same size as the state of Wisconsin in the U.S., or about three times the size of Switzerland. It is the highest country in Central Asia, with more than 90% of its territory covered by mountains, specifically the massive Pamir and Alay ranges.
The most popular sports are Gushtigiri (a traditional form of wrestling) and Football, while mountain climbing and trekking attract adventurers from all over the globe. Their national animal is the Marco Polo Sheep, famous for its spiraling horns, though the Snow Leopard is the most elusive and revered inhabitant of the high peaks.
The flag consists of three horizontal stripes of red, white, and green with a gold crown and seven stars in the center, where the red represents the unity of the nation, the white stands for purity and the snow of the mountains, and the green symbolizes the fertility of the valleys and the Islamic faith.
The food is hearty, aromatic, and centered around bread and meat. You must try Qurutob, the national dish made of strips of flaky bread soaked in a salty yogurt sauce and topped with fried onions and vegetables. Another favorite is Plov (Osh), a slow-cooked rice dish with carrots, meat, and spices that is a staple of every celebration. For a snack, look for Sambusa, savory pastries filled with meat or pumpkin. No meal is complete without Non, a traditional flatbread baked in a clay oven and treated with immense respect.
Tajikistan is home to the Pamir Highway, often called the “Second Highest International Highway” in the world, offering some of the most dramatic and remote road-trip scenery on Earth. The country features Lake Iskanderkul, a stunning turquoise alpine lake named after Alexander the Great. You can visit the Hissar Fortress, a reconstructed 18th-century stronghold that guards the entrance to a fertile valley. For a touch of history, explore Sarazm, a UNESCO site that is one of the oldest settlements in Central Asia. Interestingly, Tajikistan is home to the Fedchenko Glacier, the longest glacier in the world outside of the polar regions!
