Olyotya! Welcome to the Pearl of Africa—Uganda, a lush, landlocked country in East Africa where the savannah meets the rainforest. There are around 50,000,000 people living here, and the capital is Kampala, a vibrant city built on several hills near the shores of Lake Victoria. The official languages are English and Swahili, though Luganda is widely spoken in the central region.
Uganda covers about 241,038 square kilometers (93,065 square miles). The country is roughly the same size as the United Kingdom. It is home to the source of the Nile River and contains nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population.
The most popular sports are Football and Athletics, with the country consistently producing world-distance running champions. Their national animal is the East African Crowned Crane, a stunning bird that appears on the national flag for its elegance and gentle nature.
The flag consists of six horizontal stripes of black, yellow, and red with a white circle in the center containing a grey crowned crane where the black represents the African people, the yellow symbolizes the sunshine, and the red stands for brotherhood and the blood that connects all Africans.
The food is diverse, hearty, and relies on fresh produce from the fertile volcanic soil. You must try Matooke, the national dish of steamed and mashed green bananas, often served with a rich peanut sauce called G-nut sauce. Another favorite is the Rolex (a play on “rolled eggs”), a popular street food consisting of a vegetable omelet rolled inside a hot chapati. For a snack, look for Nsenene, fried grasshoppers that are considered a seasonal delicacy.
Uganda is home to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a misty, ancient forest where you can trek to see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. The country features Murchison Falls, where the entire Nile River is forced through a narrow 7-meter gap in the rocks, creating a thunderous explosion of water. You can visit the Kasubi Tombs, the burial site of the kings of the Buganda Kingdom and a site of great spiritual importance. For an island escape, head to the Ssese Islands in Lake Victoria for white-sand beaches and peaceful sunsets. Interestingly, Uganda is one of the youngest countries in the world, with around 50% of the population under the age of 15!
