The United States is a vast nation spanning the North American continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific. There are around 345,000,000 people living here, and while the capital is Washington, D.C., the largest city is New York City, a global hub for finance, media, and culture. While there is no official language at the federal level, English is the primary language, with Spanish being the second most spoken.

The U.S. covers about 9,833,517 square kilometers (3,796,742 square miles). To imagine its size, the country is roughly the same size as the entire continent of Europe. Its geography is incredibly diverse, ranging from the tropical beaches of Florida and the arctic tundra of Alaska to the towering Rocky Mountains and the vast Great Plains.

The most popular sports are American Football, Baseball (known as the national pastime), and Basketball. Their national animal is the Bald Eagle, a symbol of strength and freedom, while the American Bison was designated as the national mammal in 2016.

The flag consists of thirteen horizontal stripes of red alternating with white and a blue canton containing fifty small white five-pointed stars, where the stripes represent the original thirteen colonies and the stars represent the fifty states of the Union.

The food is a “melting pot” of global influences that have been reimagined into American classics. You must try a Cheeseburger, often served with fries and a milkshake. Another favorite is Barbecue (BBQ), with regional styles ranging from the sweet sauces of Kansas City to the vinegar-based traditions of the Carolinas. For a comforting meal, look for Macaroni and Cheese or a slice of Apple Pie. In the south, you’ll find Gumbo and Jambalaya, while the northeast is famous for Clam Chowder and Lobster Rolls.

The U.S. is home to the Grand Canyon, a massive and colorful steep-sided gorge carved by the Colorado River in Arizona. The country features Yellowstone, the world’s first national park, famous for its geothermal features like “Old Faithful.” You can visit the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor, a gift from France that has welcomed millions of immigrants to American shores. For a touch of entertainment, head to Hollywood in Los Angeles or Walt Disney World in Orlando. Interestingly, the United States is home to the world’s oldest written national constitution, which has been in effect since 1789!
