There are around 3,400,000 people living here, and the capital is Montevideo, a vibrant port city known for its historic colonial center and its massive coastal promenade, the Rambla. The official language is Spanish, spoken with a melodic Rioplatense accent similar to that of their neighbors in Buenos Aires.
Uruguay covers about 176,215 square kilometers (68,037 square miles). The country is roughly the same size as the state of Missouri or about twice the size of the island of Ireland. Its landscape consists mostly of rolling plains and low hills, which provide some of the finest grazing land in the world for cattle and sheep.
The most popular sport is Football, and the nation has a legendary history in the game, having won the very first World Cup in 1930. Their national animal is the Southern Lapwing (locally called the Tero), a spirited bird known for its protective nature and its frequent appearance on rugby and football crests.
The flag consists of nine horizontal stripes of white alternating with blue and a white square in the upper hoist corner containing the Sun of May, where the stripes represent the nine original departments of the country and the sun symbolizes the legendary appearance of the sun through the clouds during the independence struggle.
The food is a paradise for meat lovers and is heavily influenced by Italian and Spanish traditions. You must try Asado, a traditional barbecue where various cuts of meat are slow-cooked over an open wood fire. Another favorite is the Chivito, a towering steak sandwich loaded with ham, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and a fried egg. For a quick snack, look for Empanadas or Torta Frita. You will see almost everyone carrying a thermos and a gourd for Mate, a traditional caffeinated herbal drink that is the true social heart of the country.
Uruguay is home to Casapueblo, a stunning white Mediterranean-style “living sculpture” created by artist Carlos Páez Vilaró that overlooks the ocean in Punta Ballena. The country features Punta del Este, one of South America’s most glamorous beach resorts, famous for the “La Mano” sculpture of a hand emerging from the sand. You can visit the historic town of Colonia del Sacramento, a UNESCO World Heritage site with cobblestone streets that date back to Portuguese and Spanish colonial times. For a quiet escape, head to Cabo Polonio, a remote coastal village with no electricity or running water, reachable only by 4×4 vehicles across giant sand dunes. Interestingly, Uruguay is one of the most socially progressive nations in the world and was the first country to fully legalize the production and sale of cannabis in 2013!
