Sawubona! Welcome to the Rainbow Nation—South Africa, the southernmost country on the African continent, famous for its incredible diversity in people, landscapes, and wildlife. There are around 61 million people living here. Uniquely, the country has three capital cities: Pretoria (administrative), Cape Town (legislative), and Bloemfontein (judicial). South Africa officially recognizes 12 languages, including Zulu, Xhosa, Afrikaans, and English, making it one of the most linguistically diverse nations on Earth.

South Africa covers about 1,221,037 square kilometers (471,445 square miles). The country is roughly twice the size of France or three times the size of California. Its geography ranges from the dry, red sands of the Kalahari Desert to the lush, green “Garden Route” along the coast and the dramatic, jagged peaks of the Drakensberg Mountains.

The most popular sports are Rugby, Cricket, and Football. The national rugby team, the Springboks, are record-breaking world champions and a massive source of national unity. Their national animal is the Springbok, a fast and agile antelope, while the King Protea is the national flower.

The flag consists of a horizontal “Y” shape in green, with sections of red and blue, and a black triangle at the hoist bordered by yellow and white, where the different colors symbolize the convergence of the country’s diverse paths into a unified future.

The food reflects the “Rainbow Nation” concept, blending indigenous, Dutch, Malay, and Indian influences. You must try a Braai, a traditional South African barbecue that is more of a social event than just a meal. Another favorite is Bobotie, a spiced minced meat dish baked with an egg-based topping. For a quick snack on the go, Biltong (dried, cured meat) and Droëwors are local essentials. If you visit Durban, you have to try Bunny Chow—a hollowed-out loaf of bread filled with spicy curry.

South Africa is home to Kruger National Park, one of the largest and most famous game reserves in Africa, where you can see the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino). The country features Table Mountain in Cape Town, a flat-topped mountain that is one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature. You can visit the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO site where some of the oldest hominid fossils in the world were discovered. Interestingly, South Africa is the only country in the world to have voluntarily dismantled its own nuclear weapons program.
